Smokescreen

Set in a high-end flower house in 19th century Shanghai, Song Qi manages her establishment with the authority expected of a wolf-like fox; Qiu Ye is a formerly destitute rabbit anchored to Song’s side.

An exploration of the conditional, volatile power women held in these amorous houses, and the relationships emerging from an environment which suspends outer world constraints and conventional moral quandaries.

Inspired by the 1998 film Shanghai Flowers by Hou Hsiao Hsian.

House on a Hill

A catty adaption of the short story “Cabin on the Mountain” by Chinese author Can Xue.

To capture the surrealism signature to early Chinese avant-garde/post-contemporary literature, I created humanoid animals to represent a family fraught with resentment and paranoia. In a hostile reality with uncanny laws, beings with nine lives have the best chance at survival.

Buddhism 2.0

After overhearing (yuck, human) monks discuss the impossibility of robots attaining religious enlightenment, RU-4 fears he may have to endure a very cool Nirvana by his lonesome. Leaving the monastary to spread Buddhism 2.0, he meets a pregnant runaway, several Sigmund Freuds, and an old man in a Buddha-shaped cyborg in strange lands.

Featuring an ensemble from my favourite Sci-Fi stories from East Asia, this story is a speculation on whether posthumans can be religious in a traditional human sense.

Characters:
1. RU-4 from Park Seonghwan’s “Readymade Boddhisattva”
2. Quyhn from Djuna’s “Pentagon”
3. Freuds from Enjoe Toh’s “Freud”
4. Kujiro Takazawa and his wife from Roujin Z (1991) (cameo)
